This piece features the cash crops of sugar cane, tobacco (flowers) and cotton. The okra flower is a reminder that some slaves grew the plant to bolster their meagre food rations. Intermingled with the hibiscus and frangipani are the 'instruments' of enslavement- chains, rope and shackles. Like the Caribbean, this artwork looks inviting with its abundance of flowers but I wanted to capture that there is a painful history just beneath the surface.
