FEMME SUCRÉE:

'This is a reference to a love song from one of the most popular singers in Cameroon called PETIT PAYS, my father used to play a lot of his music in the car when I was young' — Neals Niat

A scene from the love story of LE NJOKA & PETIT MADAME; A guy pretends to be a mbenguiste* and promises to bring his girlfriend to Europe with him, however he does not live in Europe as he claims.

This print is part of the second instalment of Neals Niat’s series “Mapanes Love”, a sequence of his artistic project “Life Scenes” which began in 2018.

Typical of his graphic art style, Neals blends a mosaic of monochrome and pastel colours to showcase scenes of the love stories of three couples. Offering a critique of society, the series questions how societal influences and external pressures affect relationships, as each couple is confronted with a potential conflict.

*Mbenguiste: The name given to Cameroonians who live abroad (in the West) and more specifically in France (Mbeng)
