Moto(r) Boy

In Cameroon, “motor boy” is the name given to the driver’s assistant on buses and bush taxis, the one shouting destinations, loading luggage, chasing down passengers and collecting fares. Hanging off the door, he stands between departure and arrival, always in motion, always between two cities.

The term also extends to the motorbike taxi rider, known locally as the benskin, navigating the most widely used form of transportation across the country. From dusty roads to concrete avenues, he moves through the gaps of the city and the bush, stitching together rural and urban lives, carrying stories, goods and affections from one point to another.

Shaped by images and memories gathered by Neals Niat during his 2023 journey to Cameroon, this new series unfolds as a chapter within Mapanes Love, extending its poetic inquiry into the delicate ties between rural life and urban longing, between love, separation, and the quiet rhythms of exodus.
